For this blog post, I chose to have Macbeth make a recommendation list for Netflix must watch shows. Macbeth is seen throughout the play but his demeanor and insanity is slowly getting worse and worse.
1. 13 Reasons Why
This show is a true experience of appearance versus reality. When Clay starts to listen to tapes made by Hannah Baker right before her suicide, he has started to realize that not everything is as it seems. What he once knows turns out to be a lie and he is left questioning himself and confused about what is going on and who his friends are. Also, in the sequel to 13 Reasons Why, Clay cannot tell if Hannah is actually there or not and starts to hallucinate. He feels as if he is actually seeing Hannah when he isn't, which is exactly what Macbeth death with a little bit past halfway through the play. He orders people to kill Banquo but after that has happened, the ghost of Banquo now haunts Macbeth.
2. Criminal Minds
I chose this show next because what murderer doesn't need an intelligent mind. In this, there are many different criminals trying to get away with murder yet who are always caught in the end(sounds familiar). They murder someone and then go on a killing spree which always ends up with them in the hands of the FBI. Similar to this show, Macbeth has gotten away with murder, or has he? Many people are suspicious of Macbeth and when they come to realize that he is the one behind all of the murders, his castle is stormed and he is slain.
3. Black Mirror: The Waldo Moment
In the famous and very popular Black Mirror, there is one show in particular that specifically mimics the ambition and lust for power Macbeth has. Waldo is an animation that is played on the screen of a TV. After is recent success as a show people want him to run for office. The man who plays Waldo is less comfortable with the idea of running for office and thinks it is a bad idea. The director tells him that he can either leave or stay on. It is this director that feels nothing can stop him. He wants popularity and money and will get this by running the country in a very immodest way. This is seen with Macbeth's ambition for power as well. Macbeth will do whatever it takes to become king and will not back down.
4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas
This next show is a show that represents Macbeth because of its plot for stealing Christmas. The Grinch hates Christmas due to the songs of the children in the village below. He feels that to fix this, he will take all of their Christmas presents and thus ruin Christmas. He will gain all the power for having their gifts in his lair. This is like Macbeth because he will take charge of Scotland. He does what he feels he should do to gain power and to become the leader of Scotland. Macbeth is similar to the Grinch due to their want for power and their means for acquiring such power.
5. Black Panther
In this show, a member of Wakanda who was separated from this land at birth takes control of Wakanda. He feels that he can make a difference in the world and that he is the most suited for the position. His masculinity is seen through is vicious actions and from defeating the former king of Wakanda. He can be representative of Macbeth because he feels the only way to get things done is to kill people. He will murder in order to gain power just as this Wakandan resident has done.
